_When are these tests given?
On seven different dates during the year (click here for this year's dates). But only SAT Reasoning Test (formally the SAT I) or SAT Subject Tests (formally the SAT II) may be taken on any one testing day (students cannot take both on the same day). Click here to register for the SAT Reasoning or Subject tests.

What's the difference between the SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests?
The SAT Reasoning Test measures critical reading, writing and math skills in a 3 hour & 45 minute test. Most colleges require this test for admission purposes. The SAT Subject Tests are one hour tests in separate subject areas (click here for a list of available tests and brief descriptions of those tests). Although many colleges do not require SAT Subject Tests for admission, they are sometimes required or recommended for placement after admission purposes. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to check the catalogs and websites of the colleges to which you will apply in order to know what tests each recommends. When in doubt, call the college directly.

For information on schools that are test optional, please click this link to fairtest.org

When should I take these tests?
Students planning to go to college should take the SAT Reasoning Test in March or May of Grade 11 and October or November of Grade 12. The SAT Subject Tests are usually taken the end of Grade 11 and/or in December of Grade 12. Some students may wish to take the Biology SAT Subject Test when they complete Biology in grade 9 or 10 , or the Chemistry Subject Test when they complete Chemistry in grade 10 or 11. The Guidance Department recommends students who are doing well in the Honors science courses and/or in mathematics, to take SAT Subject Tests in those subjects in June of that school year.

How do I register for these tests?
By obtaining an application from the Guidance Department, completing the form, and mailing it with the application fee to the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey or by registering on line at: collegeboard.com. Wayland High School has become a testing center for several of the surrounding schools and gets filled up very quickly. We encourage you to register early for these tests; Wayland has become a large test center and students who do not sign up early enough may not be able to take the test at Wayland.

How much do these tests cost?
SAT Reasoning Test - $50.00, SAT Subject Area Tests - $23.00 (for one test), $12.00 for each additional test (for three tests the cost would be $47.00). Language with Listening Tests however cost $23.00, not $12.00 (language with Listening Tests are not administered at Wayland High School).  Also, if you register after the deadline there is a late fee of $27.00.

May I register on the day of the test?
No. College changed this policy in the summer of 2012. Standby testing is no longer an option. All test takers must register on-line; if a test center is full, they will be put on a wait list and extra tests will be distributed to wait list students in the order in which they registered.

How long does it take for scores to be received?
Approximately 3-4 weeks
